About Anuka

Anuka is an Oriental (Raks Sharki) dancer who is based in Toronto. She frequently performs at public and private events throughout the GTA. She is the choreographer and artistic director for her troupe Mirage, creating original dances every year for a variety of shows which have included the International Bellydance Conference of Canada, Ad Astra, Fan Expo, Steam on Queen and her own productions (Moonlight Mirage in 2014, Twilight Mirage in 2011, Midnight Mirage in 2010 , and Winter Mirage in 2009). She has appeared on Canada National TV, W Network, and HGTV.

With roots in both Egyptian and American Cabaret Bellydance styles, she has developed a signature dreamy and flowing interpretation of Bellydance. Her peers have nicknamed her the “Queen of the Veil” for her skills with veils of various fabrics, double veils and fan veils. She was the first to present a group choreography with fan veils in Toronto and the first to give fan veil workshops in Toronto. She has innovated movements, tableaus and techniques since the relatively recent introduction of fan veils to bellydance repertoire. Other specialties include finger cymbals (zils, sagat), Isis Wings, silk wings, and sword.

Anuka was a core faculty member at Dragonfly Bellydance Studio from 2010-2019 teaching specialty topic workshops and multiple weekly classes. She taught several weekly classes at Hannan's Bellydance Studio from 2007 to 2009 and at Om Laila Studio (Roula Said) in the summer of 2010.

Drawn to express the rich and variable music of the Middle East, she studied intensively with Hannan Sultan and Mayada, and has also taken classes and workshops with Yasmina Ramzy, Roula Said, and other Toronto teachers. International dance artists she has studied with include Aziza, Sharzad, Oscar Flores, Sadie, Bozenka, Aida Nour, Randa Kamel, Tito, Jillina, Ansuya, Hadia (Level 1 teacher training), Sahra Saeeda, Nath Keo, Rachel Brice, Sharon Kihara. Anuka furthers her dance education every year by taking workshops and classes with master instructors for Bellydance, folklore and fusion dance styles.
